Discovering the Final Cut

After producing these videos for quite some time, I reached a realization: encountering and overcoming new obstacles in the creative process not only fosters professional growth but also brings substantial satisfaction. Each small trick, every discovery allows for continual progress. Conversely, when merely utilizing existing skills in a project, the sense of accomplishment is lacking; it becomes routine, akin to mundane tasks. Although the end result and client satisfaction may be sufficient, the process lacks excitement.

Therefore, in this blog, I only share experiences in video creation that contribute to advancing my craft, fostering learning, and at least partially fulfilling my aspirations.

One of the early projects involved creating a short video featuring another Greek dish: Zucchini and Eggplant chips with tzatziki sauce. Unlike most projects where I discover the vision during editing, this time I had a clear idea of the final video. Setting up the scene was straightforward, with a steady camera positioned at plate level against a black background, showcasing green zucchini chips, white tzatziki, and cheese. The chef was instructed on plating the dish for easy editing. Despite some overexposure, the lighting was significantly improved compared to previous shoots. After two takes I couldn’t wait to start editing.

Selecting the soundtrack was easy; I chose the iconic “Misirlou” by Dick Dale, known for its fast-paced and engaging rhythm. However, despite syncing the video to the music, it lacked a certain spark I always seek—an underlying idea crucial to my work. The solution unexpectedly came from a new pack of transitions and effects installed on Final Cut. Experimenting with them, I discovered the missing element—a spotlight effect on the subject and two well-timed transitions at the end, creating the illusion of a magic trick performed with the dish. This enhancement complemented the mysterious, Middle Eastern vibe of “Misirlou,” leaving me immensely satisfied with the result.
